POSITION SUMMARY:  Reporting to the Director of Curriculum & Training, the Instructional Design Specialist serves as an experienced learning expert. A content creator across a variety of modes, this role is responsible for creating and maintaining content and training programs according to best practices and Chalmers’ poverty alleviation framework, achieving impact in the lives of people who are materially poor. Keeping the learner experience central, this position creates, maintains, and continuously adapts online and print curriculum content that equips the church around the world and in the U.S. to walk alongside people who are poor. From working with experts in revising facilitator guides to helping recreate live training online, this specialist creates and maintains learning materials that bring Chalmers’ ideas to life in a biblically-integrated way for learners in local church communities. This role supports 2 main areas: content development and content revisions as described in the responsibilities below. 


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Commit to pray and advocate for the poor and the church in light of the mission of the Chalmers Center
  • Coordinate the creation and maintenance of Chalmers economic development curriculum and courses to ensure that both new and existing content provide the intended learner experience and outcomes 


Content Development

  • In partnership with the Director of Curriculum & Training, develop and update learning designs and curriculum, both for online and live use, in alignment with measurable learning objectives  
  • Apply Chalmers’ principles on poverty alleviation and biblical integration to print, in-person, and online curriculum for both US and Majority World learners and realities 
  • Integrate Monitoring & Evaluation feedback and collection methods into the learning tools in a developmental way
  • As necessary, collaborate across the organization to support content creation for mass-market use, communications, and partnership objectives


Content Revisions 

  • In consultation with the Director of Curriculum & Training, maintain an annual curriculum revision cycle for tools and courses based on user feedback and advancements in best practices
  • Continually research and share new thinking and innovation to improve tools and programmatic outcomes, drawing on best practices of adult learning and universal learning design for online and print content 
  • Collaborate with experts and organizations in the field of economic development to test and review curriculum and tools. Engage with other organizations in a way that honors the dignity of people in poverty and builds the Chalmers brand
  • In conjunction with the Deployment team, ensure internal and external reviews are performed in a sharp, timely manner according to the annual curriculum revision cycle


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Commits to the Vision & Mission of the Chalmers Center
  2. Demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the organization’s statements of faith
  3. Demonstrates experience through a portfolio that exemplifies best practices in using technology for training and curriculum development across a variety of modes (online, print, video, etc.) 
  4. Demonstrates fluency in the principles and practices of holistic ministry and asset-based community development
  5. Exhibits the ability to integrate sound biblical and theological knowledge into various kinds of content
  6. Possesses outstanding flexibility amidst changing pressures and demands, acting courageously to overcome obstacles and remain hopeful in the face of hardship 
  7. Previous experience with Learning Management Systems and user experience design (UX) (preferred)
  8. Thrives in a team where humble listening, courageous action, and dependence on the Holy Spirit is highly valued
  9. Experience working as a creative thinker, problem-solver, and self-starting individual executor, while working collaboratively across teams
  10. Can manage multiple projects and priorities with strong attention to detail and timely management of tasks
  11. Carries significant cross-cultural experience (domestic and/or global), high cultural intelligence, and intercultural sensitivity
  12. Bachelor’s degree desired and 5+ years of experience in the areas of program development, curriculum and training, community development, or related fields
  13. Ability to travel up to 10%

Our team is looking for a nimble, flexible content creator who is an executor at heart. This problem solver is wired with the content creation and educational technology knowledge to assist us in improving our learning material during these changing and uncertain times.  

 

On the Curriculum & Training team, we build holistic economic development tools that churches can use—in the US and around the world—to walk relationally with people who are poor. We also maintain these tools, ensuring they stay in sync with the latest research and feedback from the field. At Chalmers, we have a knack for forming new ideas and calling the church toward innovative solutions to poverty. However, it can be challenging to turn those ideas into practical learning tools and to maintain them over the long-term. The Curriculum & Training team bridges these realities—innovative new ideas and long-term program maintenance for those deployed on the field.  


It’s a large task, and we’re a small team. As we grow, we need an instructional designer who can help us to improve and maintain our unique content—especially in this digital world now encompassing much of the globe. We are looking for someone with these traits:

 

  • Content creation.  An instructional designer by nature, you’re a natural at putting together usable learning materials. From assessments and essays to handouts or eLearning quizzes, you’re a whizz at creating and synthesizing information—no matter the mode. Even better, you’ve had some experience doing this in the world of church, anti-poverty work, and/or holistic ministry. 
  • Technical learning savvy.  You are more “techy” than we are when it comes to online learning and configuration; you’ve run in this space and have a portfolio to back it up. You’re not intimidated by the challenge of learning how plugins fit into our online learning platform or how we can better use video for educational purposes. 
  • Continuous improvement guru.  Not only do you possess a skill set that can take ideas and translate them into replicable tools and courses, but you are also masterful at maintaining and holding to a revision process for our products. An all-around executor, you have the systems chops and interpersonal skills to bring together internal/external expertise and field data into a continuous improvement process. And you like doing it! 
  • Problem solver.  You’re a self-starter when it comes to solving problems. You don’t hold a research Ph.D., but your natural curiosity leads you to discover new solutions. You see what needs to be done, and you get ahead of it. You’re innovative and always on the lookout for new best practices—yet your adoption of them is judicious. You’re a visionary for the work but ultimately a systematic and pragmatic implementer.
